Signed lower right and dated ’54. 

A very desirable example of the mid 19th Century English School by R. Poate, a well exhibited British artist best known for his miniature paintings which garner strong interest at auction.  Among the exhibited works at the British Institution and the (SS-RBA) Royal British Academy, “The Sailor’s Return” and “Harvest Time.”
